Chief of Police Urges Residents to Buckle Up
May 14, 2012
Dear Vermillion Resident, Employee, or Visitor, The Vermillion Police Department is focused on maintaining a safe community for everyone. We are joining agencies from across the State of South Dakota by participating in the “May Mobilization” to encourage seatbelt usage. Officers will work extra shifts over the next three weeks with a focus on enforcing seatbelt usage. In addition, we will make a special effort to find people who are using their seatbelt and providing them with a reward for doing the right thing!
Using your seatbelt can save your life during a car accident. Seatbelts keep you in the car and are intend to work with your airbags to protect you from injury or death during an accident. Because seatbelt usage is directly tied to survivability in a major car accident they are required by law.
Wearing your seatbelt and requiring your children to buckle up is an easy habit to get into. We never know when or where an accident will occur. The additional enforcement and incentives conducted by the Vermillion Police Department over the next three weeks are intended to remind everyone how important it is to use your seatbelts.
So join me in Buckling Up Vermillion!
Matt Betzen, Chief of Police
Vermillion SD
